German activists are attempting to destroy security cameras in anticipation of the European Police Congress in Berlin in February, according to Michael Ebeling, an opponent of public surveillance writing for France 24′s The Observers. Last week, the Senate approved to renew the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) program whereby the US government is authorized to spy on emails and phone calls of suspected terrorists (allegedly not American citizens) without court-ordered warrants. The Congress supports the use of FISA for another 5 years. With more western countries getting indirectly involved in the conflict in Mali, there’s increasing speculation about their motives. Journalist and broadcaster Neil Clark told RT, that the intervention has ‘only economic reasons’. Several western countries have already offered France, which is to boost its force to 2,500 soldiers next week, aid in Mali. The UK is providing logistical air assistance, while the United States is providing surveillance and other intelligence help. The US Congress is contemplating minting a $1 trillion platinum coin under the authorization of Timothy Geithner, US Secretary of Treasury. These platinum coins would be used to pay off the $16.4 trillion debt accrued by US government spending. The US Treasury would keep the coins in its account at the Federal Reserve Bank in Washington, DC.
